What are the benefits of a heat pump?
Once you have installed a heat pump heating system, you will benefit from a limitless supply of cheap heating.  The system sucks the heat out of the surrounding environment to heat your house.  With a heat pump central heating system in your home, you will reduce your fuel bills and minimize your impact on the environment. The system will pay for itself whilst reducing your fuel bills and will also add value to your property.

So how does it work?
T
he system works in a very similar way to a domestic refrigerator.  A long loop of pipes situated outside collects low grade energy from the environment.  For instance 1.5m below ground the temperature remains constant at ~15C all year round.  The evaporation/ compression, condensation/expansion cycle in the heat pump concentrates the heat energy, boosting the available temperature to 60C.   This is then used for space heating via under-floor heating, or radiators, and hot water heating.

Is a heat pump just compatible with under floor heating ?
There are many ways that the heat can be delivered in the home.  Under floor heating together with a heat pump is the most efficient combination. Under floor heating works with lower temperature working fluid (~40C) this improves the operating efficiency of the system (COP).  The other common alternative is hot water central heating, using conventional radiators.  When using conventional radiators the sizes of the radiators specified should be ~15% larger than normal since the temperature of the working fluid supplied by the heat pump is slightly lower than for fossil fuel powered boilers.

Will a heat pump work well in conjunction with a solar system?
Yes, a heat pump and solar water heating system are the perfect combination.  The solar panels will provide most of the hot water heating, thus freeing up more of the energy from the heat pump for space-heating.  The solar system collects energy during the day, however a heat pump can collect the energy stored in the environment 24 hours per day.

Can I use a heat pump to heat hot water?
Yes, we offer solutions just to heat hot water, or combined, to run the central heating and the hot water .
Heat pump, expansion vessel, piping and vented cylinder

Can I use a heat pump to heat my swimming pool ?
Yes , there are many different solutions to heat a swimming pool. You can use a combined heat pump which runs the central heating, the domestic hot water and heats the swimming pool . Or you use a separate air source heat pump . See Collectors for the different types of collector.

Can I use a heat pump with radiators ?
Yes , you can. However the size of the radiators and the pipe work between the heat pump and the radiators is important.
If 10mm pipe has been used to connect radiators this will need to be replaced with 15mm pipe.

Can I use a combination of a solar system and a heat pump ?
Yes , we offer a lot of solutions for homes with an existing solar system to connect this to the heat pump system. Basically the solar can work in day time and the heat pump is a backup heating system.

Will a heat pump fit into my home ?
You can use a heat pump in almost any home.  We offer solutions for every home; important factors are the size and the conditions of the building, the insulation, the windows and the kind of heat pump how efficient it will work.  We always try to find a suitable and acceptable solution for every customer depending on the circumstances .

How long it will take to get my money back ?
Quick example : you are spending in the moment £2500 , in a large farm house, on heating oil.  You replace your existing boiler with a heat pump and you can save easily £2000 a year, the other £500 you will use for electricity to run the heat pump . With an installation cost of about £8000, on average you'll get your money back in just 4 years.

One of our existing customers with a ground source heat pump used just £220 to heat his home over the winter from the 01/12/2007 to 01/05/2008 over 5 months. His home is an old farm house 180 square meter, with extension , combined under floor heating and radiators, a hot water cylinder for 5 persons and no backup heating system.

How long is the guarantee ?
On Hautec heat pumps is 2 years guarantee by the manufacturer and a further 2 years guarantee is available and included in our installation. On all other heat pumps the guarantee is as given by the manufacturer.  After a check of the system we are able to offer you 1 additional year guarantee for a annual charge.

What is an COP?
The COP , Co-efficient of Performance , is a simple calculation which works out how much energy the heat pump is able to extract from the energy source compared to the amount of electrical energy used by the heat pump .

What if I cannot use a ground collector or a borehole ?
Then you can use an air heat pump or we offer a special kind of heat pump which works with a collector called ‘ENERGY FENCE’ which you can put somewhere in the garden and it does the same job as a ground collector. Further details about this you can find on our website.  Check our Collectors page.

Can I install this myself?
Yes, many competent DIYers have successfully installed their own systems.  We can offer advice on installation, but would also recommend that the system is commissioned by one of our experts upon completion.

Will the system freeze in winter?
No, the pipes are filled with saline solution which prevents freezing.

How long will the system last?
System life is approximately 25 years.

Please email or phone to arrange a FREE, no obligation survey.  Our heat pump expert will assess your property's suitability for upgrading to a heat pump system.  We can also provide you with a fixed-price quotation for supply and installation.
